Week one, post one

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:

  • the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
  • the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.”

This week we learned about connections.

Everything is connected in one way or another, when one thing changes it can have effects on a lot of ways you wouldn’t expect.

Before this class I thought that things like climate change had only negative effects on the world. Through our group work I saw that there are both positive and negative reactions.

Everybody always focused on the negative but some people have really benefited from it.  I found this really interesting.

There are places in the artic regions which are now growing plants where it was too cold for plant life to grow not too many years ago.

Heating costs of countries like Greenland and Canada will be severely reduced if the climate warms up.

With melting glaciers transport routes may open up where there wasn’t any before which could dramatically reduce transport costs as well as making it easier and safer to transport goods.

In summary, everything is connected and can have a knock on effect on things you wouldn’t expect. Those changes aren’t all bad though so it’s nice to know its not all doom and gloom :)
